about
Jazz infused classical music and historical risqué letters presented by a full big band, string quartet and narrator; this is a different side of the Mozart we know.
The University of Queensland (UQ) Big Band performed the Australian premiere of "the other side of mozART" on Saturday 26 October (2013) at the Princess Theatre, Woolloongabba.
The event was filmed by MISH PHOTOGRAPHY, and a VERY LIMITED EDITION of the DVD has been produced.
The other side of mozART, composed and arranged by German composer Markus Geiselhart, involves jazz-infused reinterpretations of Mozart’s works such as The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro, the Jupiter Symphony, Alla Turca and the Requiem Mass.
Under the direction of award-winning trumpeter, Clint Allen, the UQ Big Band presents a series of Mozart’s letters written between 1777-1781 to his cousin Maria Anna Thekla. The letters, known as the Bäsle letters, are striking for Mozart’s humorous yet vulgar language and sexual humour.
“The other side of mozART is an innovative work as it breaks the traditional, idealised image of Mozart’s character,” Clint said. “Mozart composed such exquisite, elegant music but he also had a naughty side that I think this concert encapsulates in a fun and theatrical way,” he added.
